Spartan Helmet

My fascination with history often finds its way into my designs, and this Spartan helmet is one example of bringing the ancient world into the present. I was inspired by the iconic imagery of Spartan warriors and the strength they symbolize. I set out to reimagine the helmet using modern materials and theatrical techniques.

Utilizing EVA foam as my material, I cut and shaped each piece to mimic the lines of classical armor. I heated the EVA foam to make it more pliable to be able to mold its shape to replicate the curves of the helmet. Next, hot glue was used to bind the foam together to create a solid structure. The final stage was to paint the helmet in layers, slowly building upon metallic tones to aid in giving the helmet depth and true realistic look.  Felt was used to create the Spartan helmet crest.

The professors at the University of Michigan made this project not only a wonderful learning experience, but also very fun and engaging. This project truly allowed me to combine my love for historical research with my technical theatre and visual art skills. It was more than just creating a costume craft. It connected me to the Spartan age while transforming materials into a piece that looked realistic, durable, and timeless.
